47,000 Officers to Ensure Holiday Safety

VIVAnews – The Indonesian State Police Headquarters (Mabes Polri) is assigning 47,000 personnel to ensure safety during the Christmas and New Year holiday season. Vital areas such as places of worship, hotels, tourist spots and high-traffic areas are the main priorities.

“The operation will be conducted over a period of ten days, starting from 24 December 208 until 2 January 2009,” said Inspector General Iman Hariatna, head of Indonesian Police Law Enforcement Agency, Central Jakara, Tuesday, Dec. 23.

Hariatna cautions that terror threats are still a serious issue when it comes to ensuring safety during the holiday season at the end of this year. “It needs to be anticipated. It could come from anywhere at anytime,” he said.

Meanwhile, the head of Jakarta District Police Department, Inspector General Wahyono, said that the Department will assign 21,990 officers. “The key areas have already been determined. 1,682 churches and other susceptible areas such as Ancol,” he said.

According to Hariatna, the troops are assigned as part of preparation for the safety of the holiday season, such that the community would feel safe, comfortable and protected. He said that the police must also prioritize ethics and manners. “Being firm doesn’t mean being arrogant. Avoid arrogance and unsympathetic attitude,” he said.
