Italy Cancels Indonesia's Debts

VIVAnews - Indonesia proposed payment through debt swap for seven projects to the the Italian government reaching almost Rp 150 billion (US$13.56 million).

The projects were set forth in a Management Committee III meeting held on Friday, Jan 9, at the Coordinating Minister for the Economy's office.

It was agreed that the projects will funded using debt swap program, which is a continuation of a debt cancellation program signed on 9 March 2005, and is validated until 2010.

Coordinating Minister for the Economy Deputy of International Partnership Division Mahendra Siregar said that the proposed projects include Lampulo Fishing Port development and Promising Family (Kelurga Harapan) programs as well as road and irrigation systems construction.

"The Lampulo project values to Rp 69.5 billion (US$6,278,540) whose implementation will be handed over to Head of Marine and Fisheries Agency of Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam," said Siregar.

As for the Promising Family project, he went on to say, it will be handled by the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas). The project will aimed at Aceh and Nias valuing Rp 49.66 billion (US$4.48 million): Rp 21.6 billion (US$1.95 million) allocated for Aceh, and Rp 28.7 billion (US$2.59 million).

Five other projects attached in the debt swap program were proposed as infrastructure projects. The Department of Public Works will work on five projects: three irrigation projects totaling to Rp 43.3 billion (US$3.9 million) and two road construction projects valuing to Rp 24 billion (US$2.17 million).
