BI Eases Credit Regulation

VIVAnews - Bank Indonesia (BI) will revise several regulations that are concerned with banking credit disbursement. The regulations will be issued by late January 2009.

In the revisions, the central bank will also stipulate modification on operational risk implementation.

According to Bank Indonesia Deputy Governor Muliaman Hadad on Wednesday, Jan 14, some credit risks that will be revised including details of landing application such as non-performing loans regulation, business appliance and payment ability.

The revision will be announced by BI Governor Boediono on 30 January. "Banks are flexible in disbursing loans. There are issues concerning Risk Weighted Assets and operational risk," he said.

BI recommended that banks strengthen their capital, which function as a cushion in reduce risks including credit, market or operational risks that must be well anticipated. "Capital is needed to support expansion. If banks have strong cushion, they don't have to worry about it," he said.

Earlier, BI had also imposed that banks increase risk reserve fund by mid 2009. However, the regulation will be evaluated. In line with credit growth, the monetary authorities expected that loans will grow by between 18 and 20 percent.
