Broadcasting Commission to Eye Elections Ads

VIVAnews - The Indonesian Broadcasting Commission stated that it is ready to monitor advertisements that participants of elections air on TV and radio. As for the radio, the commission expected that the public would play larger role.

"The commission would intensively monitor TV advertisements. However, the commission does not have enough people to control radio advertisements," said Coordinator of Campaign Media Monitoring at Indonesian Broadcasting Commission, Izzul Muslimin, on Monday, Jan. 19.

Monitoring radio advertisement is more complicated due to their massive number, taking into account the limited manpower. "As for radio advertisements, the Broadcasting Commission is hoping that people report [their findings]," said Muslimin.

With regard to sanctions, the authority lies within the Elections Commission and Elections Monitoring Agency. The Broadcasting Commission only provides inputs.

The Broadcasting Commission will monitor the frequency as well as duration of an advertisement. The substance of the advertisement will be jointly monitored with the Elections Monitoring Agency.

During a plenary meeting with the Elections Commission yesterday, Jan. 19, the Broadcasting Commission gave inputs on general assembly campaign. The Broadcasting Commission stated that although a party has a campaign schedule on certain days, TVs may broadcast a talk show involving other parties on the same day.
