Three Million Workers May Be Absorbed

VIVAnews - Fund stimulation for the real sector in 2009 budget year is expected to absorb 2.6 million jobs. However, according to Minister of Human Resources and Transmigration, Erman Suparno, the figure may increase to three million in light of several programs that the government has prepared.

According to Suparno, unemployment rate in 2008 had been reduced. "The evaluation that the government made in 2008 showed that employment absorption reached 2.2 million. It's an additional 200,000 workers compared to 2007," he said on Wednesday, Jan 21.

As for unemployment rate, Suparno went on to say, the figure was 8.43 million, compared to the previous 9.39 million. During the crisis, as many as 24,700 employees have been laid off.

The government, as Finance Minister Sri Mulyani said, will use budget stimulation package to fight unemployment in Indonesia. With an unemployment rate reaching 8.3 percent in 2008, Indonesia was classified a country with highest unemployment rate in Asia.

Other Asian countries have lower unemployment rate: Philippines (7.3 percent), South Korea (3.5 percent), Malaysia (3.3 percent) and Thailand (1.4 percent).
