Indonesia to Send Team to Guantanamo

VIVAnews – Indonesian Police will cooperate with the State Intelligence Agency (BIN) in efforts to bring back Indonesian citizens currently held in Guantanamo, Cuba. There is a possibility that a team will be sent to Guantanamo to see what can be done about an Indonesian citizen, Hambali.

“If there is access and coordination, hopefully we will send a team,” said Chief of Indonesian Police, General Bambang Hendarso Danuri, at the Indonesian Police Headquarters, Tuesday, Jan. 27.

Up to this point the Indonesian Police have yet to submit a request to send a team to the terrorist holding facility. However, according to Danuri, they will continue to work on finding out the extent of the access that would be given to Indonesia to Guantanamo.

“When there is access and coordination, not only the police, but also the State Intelligence Agency (BIN) and others,” said Danuri.

One of the Indonesian citizens held in Guantanamo is perpetrator of several bombings in Indonesia, Hambali. Hambali was a top al-Qaida operative as well as a Jemaah Islamiyah operations chief, arrested in Thailand in 2003 while conducting surveillance of the U.S. and Israeli embassies in Manila.
