2009 Legislative Elections

PDIP of East Java Ready to Win Elections

VIVAnews - Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) of East Java targeted to gain minimum votes of 28 percent in the Legislative Elections by April 2009.

"We are trying to follow up a National Working Meeting in Solo, Central Java. It is aimed at guaranteeing the presidential candidacy without depending on coalition," Head of PDIP Regional Head, Sirmadji, told VIVAnews on Monday, Feb 2.

It is a higher target, compared to the 2004 Elections. At that time, the party dominated East Java by reaching 20 percent of total votes, or obtaining 24 seats at the Provincial Regional House of Representatives (DPRD) of East Java.

According to Sirmadji, every legislative candidate must blend with the constituents in order to boost votes. In addition, the party's structural board must also diffuse with people.

In the 2004 Elections, said Sirmadji, the party still adopted old campaign methods. It will apply different methods in the upcoming elections. The party will communicate with people directly and more frequently.

"It was like when we won the Regional Head Elections in Batu [Malang, East Java]. Given the public's response, our candidate should have lost," he said. "In fact, [the candidate] won because he was close to the people."

On the contrary, the experience of losing the Regional Head Elections in Bojonegoro, East Java, showed that the PDIP candidates were beaten although the public paraded fine response. In fact, the winners were from the candidates from other parties. According to Sirmadji, this happened because the candidates were not close with the people.

"That is the key. We therefore will not use advertisement. We will be closer to the people," he said.

PDIP wants to regain their previous success. The party won the 1999 Elections. PDIP achieved 151 seats in the House of Representatives (DPR). However, the party failed to have Megawati hold the presidential office because she lost votes against Abdurrahman Wahid in the General Assembly of People's Consultative Council in 1999. She ended up in the vice presidential seat.

After Abdurrahman Wahid stepped down of his office in 2001, PDIP brought Megawati to the presidential office.
