A Prominent Statistician Passed Away

VIVAnews – 7 years ago, on 4 March 2002, Prof Dr. Andi Hakim Nasoetion, M.Sc, a celebrated statistician and former president of Bogor Agricultural University (IPB), passed away.  

Nasoetion was born in Jakarta on 30 March 1932. His father, Anwar Nasoetion, was a veterinary doctor who later moved with his family to Bogor, West Java.

Upon graduating from the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Indonesia in 1958, Nasoetion worked as a lecturer in his alma mater, which was later established as Bogor Agricultural University (IPB). In 1961, he obtained a scholarship and took a Master and Doctoral degree in experimental statistics and quantitative genetics at North Carolina State University. In 1966, two year after his graduation, Nasoetion became the dean of the Faculty of Agriculture at Bogor Agricultural University (IPB).

In 1971, Nasoetion honored as Professor Emeritus of statistics and quantitative genetics at IPB. Seven years later, in 1978, he was elected as the president of IPB and it lasted for the next nine years.  

Nasoetion was the first university president in Indonesia who introduced a free entrance test program that helped high-performance students from remote provinces to study at the university. The new system, known as USMI or PMDK, was later adopted by other universities in country.   

Andi Hakim Nasoetion passed away in Jakarta, after suffering from prostate cancer, and was buried the next day in Bogor.
